Early Chambem settlers parsed the indigenous name as the compound *neelser* ("checkerboard") and *code* ("fish"), both productive nouns in their own language. The compound remains transparent to modern speakers as "checkerboard fish".

The fish has subsequently become a recurring motif in Nilscoddi national iconography, while the checkerboard pattern, an established element of Chambem visual culture from before the settlement, has remained central to Nilscoddi art and heraldry.
